The gall bladder (gallbladder) stores bile secreted by the liver, for use in digesting food.
Function
The gallbladder stores about 50ml of bile (1.7 US fluid ounces.), which is released when food containing fat enters the digestive tract, stimulating the secretion of cholecystokinin (CCK). The bile, produced in the liver, emulsifies (breaks down), fats and neutralizes acids in partly digested food.
After being stored in the gallbladder, the bile becomes more concentrated than when it left the liver, increasing its potency and intensifying its effect on fats. Most digestion occurs in the upper intestine, or, the duodenum, where it is released.
Conditions and Diseases of the gallbladder?
Sometimes the substances contained in bile crystallize in the gallbladder, forming gallstones. These small, hard concretions are more common in persons over 40, especially in women and the obese. They can cause inflammation of the gallbladder, a disorder that produces symptoms similar to those of indigestion, especially after a fatty meal is consumed. If a stone becomes lodged in the bile duct, it produces severe pain. Gallstones may pass out of the body spontaneously; however, serious blockage is treated by removing the gallbladder surgically.
Removal of the Gallbladder?
In some cases, the gallbladder must be removed. The surgery to remove the gallbladder is called a cholecystectomy (pronounced co-lee-sist-eck-toe-mee). Once the gallbladder is removed, bile is delivered directly from the liver ducts to the upper part of the intestine.
